What does 1 Thessalonians 2:18 mean?

In 1 Thessalonians 2:18, Paul explains that his absence from the people in Thessalonica was not for lack of desire to see them. He says he tried more than once to return, but Satan prevented the visit.

After describing his separation from them in verse 17, Paul speaks personally: “even I Paul.” The shift from “we” to “I” makes clear that Paul himself shared the wish to return, while “us” includes his companions in the blocked visit.

The Greek behind 1 Thessalonians 2:18

• “would” — θέλω (thelō): The word carries the sense of wanting or wishing. Here, “we would have come” expresses a desire to come, rather than simply a prediction about a future visit.
• “hindered” — ἐγκόπτω (enkoptō): The word means to hinder or obstruct. Paul uses it to describe an obstacle that stopped the intended journey from taking place.

Why 1 Thessalonians 2:18 matters

• Paul treats the separation as unwanted, not as a sign that he had forgotten the Thessalonians. In verse 17, he says they were apart “in presence, not in heart.”
