What does 1 Timothy 5:24 mean?

1 Timothy 5:24 says that people’s sins do not all become known at the same time. Some are evident before a decision is made, while others come to light later. The verse draws attention to the limits of judging a person from what can be seen immediately.

Paul describes sins as though they travel ahead of a person or follow behind. After the warning not to lay hands on anyone hastily in verse 22, the image fits Timothy’s responsibility to exercise care when recognizing people for service.
