2 Kings 10:9 (KJV)

What does 2 Kings 10:9 mean?

2 Kings 10:9 describes how, the morning after a violent event, Jehu stands before the people and addresses them directly. He admits to conspiring against and killing his master, but then points out that he was not responsible for the deaths of the many others, asking the crowd who killed them.

Jehu is speaking to the people of Samaria after the execution of Ahab’s seventy sons. By saying “Ye be righteous,” Jehu seems to challenge the people’s sense of justice or innocence, highlighting that while he openly killed his master (the king), someone else was responsible for the mass killings. This moment puts the responsibility for the broader violence into question and sets the stage for Jehu’s next actions as king.

The Hebrew behind 2 Kings 10:9

• “Righteous” (צַדִּיקִים, tsaddiqim): This word often means “innocent” or “just.” Jehu’s use of it is likely ironic or challenging, questioning whether the people can truly claim to be innocent in this situation.
• “Conspired” (קָשַׁרְתִּי, qasharti): This word means to plot or form a conspiracy. Jehu openly admits his own plot against his master, which is unusual for a new ruler to confess so plainly.
• “Slew” (הִכִּיתִי, hikiti for “slew him”; הִכּוּ, hiku for “slew all these”): The two forms refer to killing, but Jehu distinguishes between his own act (killing the king) and the killing of the many others, which he claims was not his doing.

Why 2 Kings 10:9 matters

• This verse clarifies that Jehu takes responsibility for the assassination of the king but distances himself from the massacre of Ahab’s family, raising questions about guilt and justice in a time of political upheaval.
• The verse highlights the tense atmosphere in Samaria after Jehu’s coup, showing the uncertainty and fear among the people as power changes hands.
• Jehu’s speech sets up the next part of the narrative, where he consolidates his rule and addresses the aftermath of the violence, helping readers understand the complex transition of power in Israel’s history.
