2 Samuel 21:15 (KJV)

What does 2 Samuel 21:15 mean?

2 Samuel 21:15 describes a time when the Philistines started another war with Israel, and King David, along with his servants, went down to fight them. During this battle, David became exhausted and weak.

This verse sets the scene for a series of battles between Israel and the Philistines later in David’s reign. The passage highlights David’s personal involvement in the fighting, even as he grows older and his strength begins to fail. It marks a turning point, showing that David is no longer the unstoppable warrior he once was, and hints at the need for others to step up in Israel’s battles.

The Hebrew behind 2 Samuel 21:15

• פְּלִשְׁתִּים (P'lishtim) — “Philistines”: This word refers to Israel’s long-standing enemies, emphasizing the ongoing threat they posed throughout David’s life.
• יָרַד (yarad) — “went down”: This verb often means physically going down from a higher place, which can signal David’s active leadership and presence on the battlefield.
• עָבַד (eved) — “servants”: Here, it refers to David’s loyal warriors or officials who fought alongside him, showing that he was not alone in battle.
• עָיֵף (ayeph) — “faint”: This word means to be weary or exhausted, underlining David’s human limitations and vulnerability in his later years.

Why 2 Samuel 21:15 matters

• This verse clarifies that David, despite being king, still personally led his men into battle, which was not always expected of ancient kings, especially as they aged.
• The mention of David growing faint signals a shift in his role and foreshadows the need for new leadership and support within Israel’s army.
• It connects to the surrounding stories where David’s men begin to take on greater responsibility, highlighting the transition from David’s personal heroics to the collective strength of his followers.
