2 Samuel 22:42 (KJV)

What does 2 Samuel 22:42 mean?

2 Samuel 22:42 describes a moment when David’s enemies desperately searched for help and deliverance, but no one could save them—not even when they called out to the LORD, who did not answer them. The verse shows their complete helplessness and abandonment in the face of defeat.

David is singing a song of thanksgiving after God delivered him from his enemies and from Saul. In this part of the song, David recalls how those who opposed him were left without rescue; even when they turned to God (the LORD), their cries went unanswered. This highlights the total reversal of fortune for David’s enemies, emphasizing God’s protection of David and the futility of resisting God’s chosen one.

The Hebrew behind 2 Samuel 22:42

• “looked” (שָׁעָה, sha‘ah): This word often means to look around or seek help. Here, it suggests David’s enemies were searching everywhere for someone to save them, showing their desperation.
• “save” (יָשַׁע, yasha‘): This verb means to deliver or rescue. The verse makes clear that no deliverance was available to David’s enemies, underlining their hopelessness.
• “LORD” (יְהוָה, YHWH): This is the personal name of God in the Hebrew Bible. The verse notes that even appealing directly to the LORD did not bring them help, which is striking since the LORD is usually seen as a source of salvation.
• “answered” (עָנָה, ‘anah): This word means to respond or reply. The lack of response from the LORD emphasizes that the enemies were not just ignored by people, but also by God Himself.

Why 2 Samuel 22:42 matters

• The verse clarifies that David’s victory was not just a military success but was also seen as a sign of God’s judgment against those who opposed him.
• It emphasizes the idea that God’s support is not automatic; even calling on the LORD does not guarantee an answer if someone is acting against God’s will.
• This verse connects to the larger theme of the chapter, where David credits all his deliverance to God and contrasts his own experience of God’s help with the utter defeat of his enemies.
