What does 2 Samuel 24:12 mean?

2 Samuel 24:12 records God’s message to King David, delivered through the prophet Gad, offering David a choice among three possible punishments for his actions. David is told to select one of these consequences, which God will then carry out.

The verse takes place after David has ordered a census of Israel, an act that displeased God. God sends Gad to David with a message: David must choose one of three judgments as a result of his decision. This moment highlights the seriousness of David’s actions and God’s direct involvement in the consequences.

The Hebrew behind 2 Samuel 24:12

  • "Go" (הָלַךְ, halakh): This word means to go or walk. Here, it emphasizes the urgency and directness of Gad’s mission to deliver God’s message to David.
  • "Offer" (נָטָה, natah): This word can mean to stretch out or present. In this context, it shows that God is actively laying out options before David, not just telling him what will happen.
  • "Choose" (בָּחַר, bachar): This word means to select or decide. The use of this word underlines that David is given real agency in selecting the consequence, which is unusual in stories of divine judgment.
