Deuteronomy 1:35 (KJV)

What does Deuteronomy 1:35 mean?

Deuteronomy 1:35 states that none of the men from the current "evil generation" would be allowed to see the good land that God had promised to their ancestors. This is a declaration of judgment, saying that because of their actions, these people would not enter the land God swore to give their fathers.

In this verse, Moses is speaking to the Israelites, reminding them of what God said after their refusal to trust Him at the edge of the promised land. The "evil generation" refers to the adults who left Egypt but doubted and rebelled in the wilderness. The "good land" is the land of Canaan, which God had promised to Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob.

The Hebrew behind Deuteronomy 1:35

• "Evil" (רָע, ra‘): This word describes the character of the generation, often meaning not just morally bad but also harmful or destructive in their choices. It emphasizes why they are being excluded.
• "Generation" (דּוֹר, dor): This term points to a whole age group or era, not just a few individuals, highlighting that the judgment is on an entire group who shared the same attitudes.
• "See" (רָאָה, ra’ah): In Hebrew, "see" can mean to experience or enjoy, not just physically look at. Here, it means they will not get to enter or benefit from the promised land.
• "Sware" (שָׁבַע, shava‘): This is the verb for making an oath. It underlines that God’s promise to the ancestors was solemn and binding, making the exclusion of this generation especially significant.

Why Deuteronomy 1:35 matters

• This verse clarifies that the exclusion from the land was not random but a direct result of the generation’s actions and attitudes, not just a few isolated mistakes.
• The verse connects the promise of the land to the ancestors ("your fathers"), reminding the people that God’s promises are serious and have conditions for those who receive them.
• Understanding the meaning of "see" in Hebrew helps readers realize that the judgment was about missing out on the experience and blessing of the land, not just being denied a view.
