Deuteronomy 4:21 (KJV)

What does Deuteronomy 4:21 mean?

Deuteronomy 4:21 describes how Moses tells the Israelites that the LORD was angry with him because of them and swore that Moses would not be allowed to cross the Jordan River or enter the good land that God was giving the people as their inheritance. Moses is explaining why he himself will not enter the Promised Land, even though the people will.

In this verse, Moses is speaking to the Israelites as they prepare to enter Canaan. He reminds them that his own exclusion from the land is connected to their actions and God’s response to them. This sets a serious tone, showing the consequences of disobedience and the importance of listening to God’s commands as they move forward.

The Hebrew behind Deuteronomy 4:21

• The word "angry" (אָנַף, 'anaph) means to be enraged or deeply displeased. Here, it emphasizes the seriousness of God’s response to Moses’ and the people’s actions.
• "Sware" (שָׁבַע, shava‘) means to make a solemn oath. God’s promise that Moses would not enter the land is not just a passing statement, but a binding declaration.
• "Inheritance" (נַחֲלָה, nachalah) refers to a permanent possession passed down. This highlights that the land is not just a temporary place to live, but a lasting gift from God to the Israelites.

Why Deuteronomy 4:21 matters

• This verse clarifies that Moses’ punishment was not only about his own actions but was also tied to the people’s behavior, showing the close connection between leader and community in Israel’s story.
• It underscores the seriousness of God’s promises and warnings, as even Moses, the great leader, was not exempt from consequences.
• The verse connects to the larger theme in Deuteronomy of remembering past failures and God’s faithfulness as the people prepare to enter a new chapter in their history.
