Deuteronomy 4:38 (KJV)

What does Deuteronomy 4:38 mean?

Deuteronomy 4:38 describes how God promised to remove nations that were larger and stronger than Israel so that the Israelites could enter and receive their land as an inheritance. The verse highlights that this promise was being fulfilled at that very time.

In this verse, Moses is speaking to the Israelites as they prepare to enter the land of Canaan. He reminds them that God is actively making a way for them by driving out other nations (peoples) who seem more powerful. The focus is on God’s action and faithfulness in giving the Israelites a homeland, something they could not have accomplished by their own strength.

The Hebrew behind Deuteronomy 4:38

• "Out" (יָרַשׁ, yarash): This word often means to dispossess or drive out, not just to leave a place but to take it from someone else. It emphasizes that Israel would take over land already occupied.
• "Nations" (גּוֹי, goy): This word refers to peoples or ethnic groups, not just political states. Here, it highlights the diversity and established presence of those living in Canaan.
• "Inheritance" (נַחֲלָה, nachalah): This word means an allotted portion or heritage, suggesting the land is not just territory but a lasting gift meant to be passed down through generations.

Why Deuteronomy 4:38 matters

• This verse clarifies that the Israelites’ possession of the land was not due to their own power or merit, but because of God’s intervention and promise.
• Deuteronomy 4:38 connects to the larger theme of the chapter, which is about remembering God’s deeds and faithfulness as the foundation for Israel’s identity and obedience.
• The verse helps correct the misunderstanding that the land was empty or unclaimed; it was inhabited by established nations, making God’s promise and action even more significant.
