What does Exodus 25:8 mean?

Exodus 25:8 presents God’s purpose for a sanctuary: a special place made by the Israelites where he would dwell among them. The building was to give a visible place to God’s presence in the midst of the people.

God is speaking to Moses, who is to pass the instructions on to the Israelites. Coming after the request for materials in verses 2–7, the words “let them make” give the people a part in preparing the place. The purpose is expressed in terms of where God will dwell: “among them.”

The Hebrew behind Exodus 25:8

• “sanctuary” — מִקְדָּשׁ (miqdash): This means a place set apart as holy. The word marks the structure as a special place for God, rather than an ordinary shelter.
• “dwell” — שָׁכַן (shakhan): This carries the sense of settling or living in a place. Here the word pictures God’s presence among the people as continuing, rather than as a brief visit.

Why Exodus 25:8 matters

• The sanctuary was to be made according to a given pattern, not simply as the builders chose. Verse 9 directs Moses to make the dwelling and its furnishings after the pattern God shows him.
• The sanctuary belonged within the Israelites’ camp. The later camp arrangement places the tent of meeting in the middle, with the tribes around it (Numbers 2:17).
