Exodus 40:32 (KJV)

What does Exodus 40:32 mean?

Exodus 40:32 describes how the priests washed themselves whenever they entered the tent of meeting or approached the altar, just as the LORD had instructed Moses. This verse highlights the careful obedience to God’s commands about ritual cleanliness in the tabernacle.

In this passage, the focus is on the priests’ actions during the setup of the tabernacle at Mount Sinai. Moses is recording how Aaron and his sons followed the LORD’s (H3068) instructions by washing before performing their duties. This washing was not just about physical cleanliness but was a required step for approaching holy places in the worship of God, showing respect for God’s holiness and the seriousness of their role.

The Hebrew behind Exodus 40:32

• "tent" (אֹהֶל, ohel): This word refers to the tent of meeting, the central place where God’s presence dwelled among the Israelites. It emphasizes the special, set-apart nature of this space.
• "congregation" (מוֹעֵד, mo'ed): Often understood as an appointed place or meeting, this word signals that the tent was not just any tent, but the designated spot for God’s people to gather and encounter Him.
• "washed" (רָחַץ, rachatz): This verb means to wash or bathe, and in this context, it refers to ritual washing. The act was a visible sign of preparation and respect before entering God’s presence.
• "commanded" (צָוָה, tsavah): This word means to command or order. The verse stresses that these actions were done exactly as God had instructed Moses, underlining the importance of obedience in worship.

Why Exodus 40:32 matters

• Exodus 40:32 clarifies that ritual washing was not optional or symbolic only, but a specific command from God that the priests were expected to follow every time they served.
• The verse connects the priests’ actions to God’s direct instructions, showing that worship in Israel was structured around obedience to God’s revealed will, not personal preference.
• This detail ties into the broader theme of Exodus 40, where the tabernacle is set up exactly as God directed, highlighting the importance of order, holiness, and preparation in approaching God.
