Ezekiel 21:32 (KJV)

What does Ezekiel 21:32 mean?

Ezekiel 21:32 declares that the people being addressed will be completely destroyed, their memory wiped out, and their land stained with their blood, because the LORD has decreed it. This is a final statement of judgment, emphasizing that their fate is sealed and irreversible.

In this verse, God is speaking through the prophet Ezekiel to announce the total downfall of a nation or group (historically, this refers to the Ammonites). The language is vivid and final: they will become "fuel to the fire," their blood will be spilled in their own land, and they will be forgotten. The verse closes with God's authority—He has spoken, so it will happen.

The Hebrew behind Ezekiel 21:32

  • "fuel" (אָכְלָה, 'okhlah): This word means something that is consumed by fire, emphasizing that the people will be completely used up or destroyed.
  • "fire" (אֵשׁ, 'esh): Fire in the Hebrew Bible often symbolizes judgment or total destruction, so being "fuel to the fire" stresses the completeness of their end.
  • "blood" (דָּם, dam): The mention of blood in the midst of the land highlights the violence and public nature of their downfall.
  • "remembered" (זָכַר, zakar): To not be remembered means to be erased from collective memory, a particularly strong statement in a culture where legacy and remembrance were highly valued.
  • "LORD" (יְהוָה, YHWH): The use of God's personal name underlines the authority and certainty of this pronouncement.
  • "spoken" (דָּבַר, dabar): This word for "spoken" carries the sense of a formal declaration; what God says is final and unchangeable.

Why Ezekiel 21:32 matters

  • This verse clears up any idea that the judgment is temporary or partial; the language shows it is total and final.
  • The emphasis on being "no more remembered" highlights the seriousness of being cut off not just physically but also from history and legacy.
  • By ending with "for I the LORD have spoken it," the verse ties the outcome directly to God's authority, showing that this is not just a prediction but a decree from the highest power.
