Ezekiel 33:11 (KJV)

What does Ezekiel 33:11 mean?

Ezekiel 33:11 says that God does not want wicked people to die, but instead wants them to turn from their wrong ways and live. God urges the people of Israel to change their behavior, asking why they would choose death by continuing in evil.

In this verse, God is speaking through the prophet Ezekiel to the people of Israel, who are facing judgment because of their persistent wrongdoing. The verse highlights God's desire for repentance rather than punishment, showing that God’s heart is for people to change and find life. The context is a warning, but also an invitation to turn back before it is too late.

The Hebrew behind Ezekiel 33:11

• "Pleasure" (חָפֵץ, chafetz) means to delight in or desire. The verse uses this word to stress that God does not take satisfaction in the death (מָוֶת, mavet) of the wicked (רָשָׁע, rasha‘), making clear that judgment is not God’s goal.
• "Turn" (שׁוּב, shuv) appears several times and means to return or change direction. The repetition emphasizes how urgently God wants people to change their ways.
• "Live" (חָיָה, chayah) means to have life, not just physically but in a fuller sense. God’s call is not just to avoid death, but to experience true life by turning away from evil.

Why Ezekiel 33:11 matters

• This verse corrects the idea that God enjoys punishing people; it shows that God’s real desire is for people to repent and live.
• The strong call to "turn" highlights personal responsibility—each person or group must choose whether to continue in evil or to change.
• In the wider passage, Ezekiel is acting as a watchman, warning Israel of coming judgment, but this verse shows that warning is meant to save, not condemn.
