What does Ezekiel 33:2 mean?

Ezekiel 33:2 introduces a picture of a community preparing for danger. God tells Ezekiel to describe what happens when a land faces the sword and its people appoint one of their own as a watchman. The picture sets up the explanation of Ezekiel’s own role later in the passage.

God addresses Ezekiel as “Son of man” and tells him to speak to “the children of thy people.” The “sword” pictures the threat of violent attack, while the watchman is someone chosen to look out for approaching danger.

The Hebrew behind Ezekiel 33:2

• “coasts” — קָצֶה (qatseh): This word can refer to an end, edge, or limit. Here the phrase “a man of their coasts” describes someone from among the people’s own territory, not necessarily someone from a seashore.
• “watchman” — צָפָה (tsaphah): This word carries the sense of looking out or keeping watch. The title points to the person’s task of watching for danger that others may not yet see.
