What does Genesis 34:19 mean?

Genesis 34:19 describes Shechem’s readiness to accept the condition set by Jacob’s sons because he wanted to marry Dinah, Jacob’s daughter. The narrator also identifies Shechem as a man held in high regard among his father’s household.

The “thing” Shechem did was to be circumcised, as the brothers had demanded in verse 15. Circumcision was the removal of the foreskin from the male sex organ. The statement about Shechem’s standing helps explain why his agreement would carry weight in the town.

• “delight” — חָפֵץ (chafets): This word can express desire or a strong attraction. Here it gives Shechem’s reason for acting without delay.
• “honourable” — כָּבֵד (kaved): This word can describe someone who is respected or held in high regard. It points to Shechem’s standing among his father’s people.

Why Genesis 34:19 matters

• Shechem’s desire for Dinah follows his earlier violence against her. Verse 2 says that Shechem took Dinah and forced himself on her; verse 19 describes his desire in that troubling setting.
