What does Ezekiel 37:1 mean?

Ezekiel 37:1 begins an account in which God brings Ezekiel to a valley filled with bones. The scene places Ezekiel before a picture of death and prepares him to hear what God will say about Israel’s situation.

Ezekiel tells the account in the first person. “The hand of the LORD” pictures God’s power acting upon him, while being carried “in the spirit of the LORD” shows that God directs his journey. Ezekiel’s surroundings give the message that follows a striking setting.

The Hebrew behind Ezekiel 37:1

  • “hand” — יָד (yad): The word means “hand” and can also suggest power or control. Here, the phrase “the hand of the LORD” describes God’s power coming upon Ezekiel.

Why Ezekiel 37:1 matters
