What does Ezekiel 38:16 mean?

Ezekiel 38:16 presents Gog’s attack on Israel as an event God will bring about for a purpose. God says that the nations will come to know him when he shows them, through what happens to Gog, that he is holy.

God is speaking to Gog, the leader addressed in the passage. The image of a cloud covering the land pictures an invading force spreading across it. The phrase “in the latter days” places the attack at a future time from the speaker’s point of view.

The Hebrew behind Ezekiel 38:16

  • “heathen” — גּוֹיִם (goyim): The word means “nations” or “peoples.” Here the KJV word “heathen” refers to the nations who will witness what God does.
  • “know” — יָדַע (yadaʿ): The word can mean to know through recognition or experience. Here the nations come to recognize God through events they see.
