What does Ezra 4:6 mean?

Ezra 4:6 describes an attempt to turn the Persian king against the people of Judah and Jerusalem. Early in Ahasuerus’s reign, opponents sent him a written accusation, seeking to bring local hostility to the attention of the ruler who had power over the region.

The narrator reports the action rather than quoting the letter. After the opposition described in verse 5, the verse moves to a later king’s reign and shows that the conflict continued.

The Hebrew behind Ezra 4:6

• “accusation” — שִׂטְנָה (sitnah): The word carries the sense of a complaint or charge made by an opponent. Here it describes a hostile written submission, not simply a report to the king.
• “inhabitants” — יָשַׁב (yashav): The underlying word means to live or dwell. The charge was directed at people living in Judah and Jerusalem, a broader group than the builders alone.

Why Ezra 4:6 matters
