Genesis 18:10 (KJV)

What does Genesis 18:10 mean?

Genesis 18:10 records a visitor telling Abraham that he will return at a set time in the future, and at that time, Sarah, Abraham’s wife, will have a son. Sarah, who is nearby but out of sight, overhears this promise from the entrance of the tent.

In this scene, Abraham is visited by three men, one of whom speaks with authority and delivers a promise about Sarah bearing a child. The verse highlights the specific prediction of a son for Sarah, even though she is advanced in age. The detail that Sarah is listening from behind the tent door sets up her later reaction and shows the private, almost hidden nature of this moment.

The Hebrew behind Genesis 18:10

• "Certainly return" comes from the Hebrew word שׁוּב (shuv), which means "to return" or "to come back." The repetition in the Hebrew often gives a sense of certainty or emphasis, so the promise is strong and definite.
• "Time" is עֵת (et), which means a specific or appointed time. This suggests that the promise is not vague but tied to a particular season or period, often understood as the time of life or the time it takes for a pregnancy.
• "Life" is חַי (chai), meaning "life" or "living." In this context, it is often taken to mean "the time of life," likely referring to the time it takes for a child to be conceived and born.
• "Heard" is שָׁמַע (shama), which means "to hear" or "to listen." The verse notes that Sarah is not just present but actively listening, which becomes important for her reaction in the following verses.

Why Genesis 18:10 matters

• Genesis 18:10 makes clear that the promise of a son is not just for Abraham but specifically for Sarah, emphasizing her role in the fulfillment of God's promise.
• The verse highlights the miraculous nature of the promise, as Sarah is well past childbearing age, setting up the surprise and doubt that follow.
• By noting that Sarah overheard the promise from the tent door, Genesis 18:10 sets the stage for her personal response and the unfolding of the story’s next moments.
