Genesis 3:20 (KJV)

What does Genesis 3:20 mean?

Genesis 3:20 says that Adam gave his wife the name Eve because she would become the mother of all living people. This verse highlights Eve’s special role as the ancestor of all humanity.

Genesis 3:20 comes right after the story of Adam and Eve’s disobedience in the garden. Adam is speaking, and he names his wife “Eve” in response to what has just happened. The name is linked to her new identity as the one from whom all human life will come, even after the fall from innocence.

The Hebrew behind Genesis 3:20

• Eve (חַוָּה, chavvah): This name is closely related to the Hebrew word for “life” or “living.” The verse connects her name to her role as the “mother of all living,” showing a wordplay that ties her identity to the idea of life itself.
• Living (חַי, chai): This word means “alive” or “living.” By calling Eve the “mother of all living,” the text emphasizes her foundational place in the human story, not just as Adam’s wife but as the source of all future people.

Why Genesis 3:20 matters

• Genesis 3:20 clarifies that all humans are seen as descendants of Eve, which is a key idea in the early chapters of Genesis.
• The verse shifts the focus from the consequences of sin to the hope of ongoing life, even after the fall.
• By naming Eve at this moment, the text marks a turning point in the story, moving from judgment to the continuation of humanity’s story.
