Genesis 45:3 (KJV)

What does Genesis 45:3 mean?

Genesis 45:3 describes the moment when Joseph reveals his identity to his brothers, asking if his father is still alive. His brothers are so shocked and disturbed by this revelation that they cannot respond to him.

In this scene, Joseph is speaking directly to his brothers, who had sold him into slavery years before and now stand before him in Egypt without recognizing him. The verse highlights the intensity of the moment—the brothers are overwhelmed and frightened, unable to process that the powerful Egyptian official before them is actually their long-lost brother.

The Hebrew behind Genesis 45:3

• The word "troubled" comes from the Hebrew בָּהַל (bahal), which often means to be alarmed or terrified. This suggests that Joseph’s brothers were not just surprised but deeply unsettled and afraid, likely because of guilt and fear of retribution.
• The word "presence" is from פָּנִים (panim), which literally means "face" or "in front of." Here, it emphasizes that the brothers are standing face-to-face with Joseph, making the encounter intensely personal and direct.
