What does Hosea 7:16 mean?

Hosea 7:16 says that Israel changes direction without returning to the Most High. The verse pictures a people who cannot be relied on, and it warns that their rulers’ angry speech will lead to their death and bring ridicule from Egypt.

God speaks through Hosea about Israel. The “deceitful bow” pictures a weapon that fails the person aiming it. The image follows God’s statement in verse 15 that he had strengthened Israel’s arms, yet the people plotted evil against him.

The Hebrew behind Hosea 7:16

• “deceitful” — רְמִיָּה (remiyyah): This word carries the sense of treachery or unreliability. Joined with “bow,” it suggests a weapon that fails to shoot as its user expects.
• “rage” — זַעַם (zaʿam): This word can mean anger or indignation. Here it describes the force of the princes’ speech, rather than anger kept to themselves.
• “derision” — לַעַג (laʿag): This word means mocking or scorn. Egypt is pictured as a place where Israel’s downfall becomes something people laugh at.

Why Hosea 7:16 matters

• Hosea distinguishes movement from a return to God. “They return” sounds like a change of course, but “not to the most High” identifies what is missing from that change.
