What does Hosea 7:4 mean?

Hosea 7:4 describes the people as adulterers whose wrongdoing is like the heat of a baker’s oven. The image suggests desire that remains intense even while there is a pause in outward activity. The charge is sweeping: Hosea says “they are all adulterers.”

The baker kneads the dough, then waits for it to rise before tending the oven again. An audience familiar with baking could picture the oven remaining hot during that wait. After the dishonesty mentioned in verse 3, the image gives a sense of wrongdoing that continues beneath the surface.

The Hebrew behind Hosea 7:4

  • “adulterers” — נָאַף (naʾaf): This word refers to unfaithfulness in marriage. In Hosea, such language can also describe Israel’s unfaithfulness to God, giving the charge a wider force than sexual conduct alone.
  • “raising” — עוּר (ʿur): This word can mean stirring up or rousing. In the KJV’s picture, the baker stops stirring up the oven’s fire while the dough rises.
