What does Isaiah 10:22 mean?

Isaiah 10:22 says that Israel’s great numbers will not prevent a devastating judgment. Only a surviving part of the people will return, and the destruction God has decreed will be carried out with righteousness: God will act justly.

The image of people as numerous as sand recalls God’s promise to Abraham that his descendants would be beyond counting. In Isaiah’s warning, that familiar image makes the prospect of a surviving remnant especially striking.

The Hebrew behind Isaiah 10:22

• “return” — שׁוּב (shuv): This word can mean to turn back or come back. In the surrounding passage, returning includes turning back to God, as verse 21 makes clear.
• “consumption” — כִּלָּיוֹן (killayon): This word carries the sense of destruction or a complete end. The KJV’s “consumption” describes a devastating judgment, not the ordinary use of something.
• “overflow” — שָׁטַף (shataf): This word can describe something sweeping or flooding over an area. The image gives force to the extent of the decreed destruction.

Why Isaiah 10:22 matters

• Isaiah connects the warning to a promise already familiar to Israel. The phrase “as the sand of the sea” echoes Genesis 22:17, where God speaks to Abraham about his descendants.
• The passage makes clear that the judgment is not random. Isaiah calls the destruction “decreed” and says it will “overflow with righteousness,” describing it as a determined and just act.
