What does Isaiah 10:9 mean?

Isaiah 10:9 presents the Assyrian king boasting that cities are alike in the face of his power. By comparing Calno with Carchemish, Hamath with Arpad, and Samaria with Damascus, he treats their differences as unimportant: each can fall to Assyria.

The questions expect the answer “yes.” Coming after the king’s claim about his commanders in verse 8, they give examples of the reach he believes his army has. Isaiah lets the king’s own words expose his confidence.

Why Isaiah 10:9 matters

• The comparisons move toward territory familiar to Isaiah’s audience. Samaria was the chief city of the northern kingdom of Israel, and Damascus was the chief city of neighboring Syria. Their pairing would bring the threat close to home for people in Judah.

• The list prepares for the king’s next target. In verse 11, he asks whether he will do to Jerusalem what he has done to Samaria. The earlier comparisons lead into that claim.

• The boast is the Assyrian king’s point of view, not Isaiah’s final judgment on his success. Later in the passage, Isaiah says that God will punish the king for his pride (Isaiah 10:12).
