What does Isaiah 14:9 mean?

Isaiah 14:9 pictures the king of Babylon arriving in the place of the dead after his downfall. Former rulers rise to meet him, showing that the powerful king has joined the dead rulers who came before him.

The verse gives the place of the dead an active role, as though it could prepare a reception. Its guests are “the chief ones of the earth” and “the kings of the nations.” Their thrones make the scene resemble a royal gathering, but the visitor’s power has come to an end.

The Hebrew behind Isaiah 14:9

• “Hell” — שְׁאוֹל (sheʾol): This word refers to the place of the dead. The picture is of a realm below where the dead gather, including former kings.
• “dead” — רְפָאִים (rephaʾim): Here the word carries the sense of departed spirits, or shades of the dead. It helps explain how the verse can picture the dead as figures who rise to greet the king.
• “chief ones” — עַתּוּדִים (ʿattudim): The word can mean male goats and is used here as an image for leaders. The KJV brings out its sense in the scene: these are people who once held high positions on earth.

Why Isaiah 14:9 matters

• The king’s greatness is viewed against his downfall. In the taunt directed at the king of Babylon, the dead ask, “Art thou also become weak as we?” (verses 4 and 10).
• The royal welcome is full of irony. The dead rise from “their thrones,” but their words in verse 10 greet the newcomer as someone who has become like them.
