What does Isaiah 24:19 mean?

Isaiah 24:19 describes the earth as though it were coming apart. Its three forceful phrases present the devastation as overwhelming, with the ground beneath people’s lives no longer firm. The verse gives a picture of the scale of the destruction being announced.

After the shaking described in verse 18, the speaker piles up three images of damage and movement. The repeated phrase “the earth” keeps the reader’s attention on the whole scene rather than on one ruined place.
