What does Isaiah 57:2 mean?

Isaiah 57:2 describes the death of people who have lived rightly as an entrance into peace and rest. Coming after the mention of their deaths in verse 1, the verse presents their end not simply as a loss, but as release from the trouble around them.

The image of “beds” pictures the dead lying at rest, as though in a place of sleep. “Each one walking in his uprightness” describes the kind of life these people had led: they had conducted themselves honestly and rightly.

The Hebrew behind Isaiah 57:2

• “peace” — שָׁלוֹם (shalom): This word often carries a sense of well-being or wholeness. Here, it gives a fuller picture of peace than merely the absence of noise or conflict.
• “beds” — מִשְׁכָּב (mishkav): This word means a place where someone lies down. In this setting, it gives the grave the image of a resting place.

Why Isaiah 57:2 matters
