What does Isaiah 8:1 mean?

Isaiah 8:1 describes the LORD telling Isaiah to make a large written announcement about coming plunder. The unusual name Mahershalalhashbaz carries that warning, giving the people a short phrase they could recognize before the events described later in the passage.

The KJV’s “great roll” pictures a large writing surface, and “a man’s pen” suggests ordinary, readable writing. The command comes after the warning about Assyria in Isaiah 7:20, giving a new form to the message of approaching trouble.

The Hebrew behind Isaiah 8:1

• “roll” — גִּלָּיוֹן (gillayon): This word refers to a writing surface or tablet. The command to make it “great” points to something large enough to carry a noticeable inscription.

• “pen” — חֶרֶט (ḥeret): This word refers to a writing or engraving tool. The phrase translated “a man’s pen” is often understood to mean writing in ordinary characters that people could read.

• “Mahershalalhashbaz” — מַהֵר שָׁלָל חָשׁ בַּז (maher shalal ḥash baz): This name is often understood to mean “quick to the plunder, swift to the spoil.” Both “plunder” and “spoil” refer to goods taken by force.
