What does James 4:8 mean?

James 4:8 calls people to turn toward God with both their actions and their inner loyalties. James promises that God will draw near to them, while calling those he addresses “sinners” and “double minded” as he tells them to cleanse their hands and purify their hearts.

“Hands” picture what people do, while “hearts” point to their inner thoughts and desires. After the call to submit to God in verse 7, James describes a change that reaches both outward behavior and inward intent.

The Greek behind James 4:8

  • “nigh” — ἐγγίζω (engizō): This word carries the sense of coming near or approaching. James uses the same word for the people’s approach to God and God’s approach to them.

Why James 4:8 matters
