What does Job 23:4 mean?

Job 23:4 describes what Job would do if he could come before God: he would present his case and give reasons for God to hear him. Job speaks as someone seeking a hearing, not merely as someone expressing his pain.

After wishing in verse 3 that he knew where to find God, Job imagines a formal encounter like a hearing before a judge. “Fill my mouth with arguments” pictures him speaking at length about his case.

The Hebrew behind Job 23:4

• “order” — עָרַךְ (ʿarakh): The word can mean to arrange or set something in order. Here it suggests that Job would lay out his case carefully before God.
• “cause” — מִשְׁפָּט (mishpat): This word can refer to a case or a matter brought for judgment. It adds to the picture of Job seeking a hearing.
• “arguments” — תּוֹכָחָה (tokhakhah): This word can carry the sense of reasons or statements offered in a dispute. Job imagines having plenty to say in support of his case.

Why Job 23:4 matters

• Job wants an encounter with God himself. The words “before him” follow Job’s wish to find God in verse 3, so his imagined hearing is direct.
• Job expects a response as well as a chance to speak. In verse 5, he says he wants to know what God would answer him.
