What does Job 26:10 mean?

Job 26:10 describes God setting a boundary around the waters and maintaining it for as long as day and night continue. In the KJV, Job’s words picture the waters as subject to a limit God has established, rather than as an uncontrolled expanse.

Job is answering his friend Bildad. After speaking of the earth in verse 7, Job turns to the waters and their farthest visible edge. “Until the day and night come to an end” presents the boundary as lasting throughout the familiar cycle of light and darkness.

The Hebrew behind Job 26:10

• “compassed” — חוּג (ḥug): This word can mean to draw a circle or mark out a round shape. It gives Job’s picture the sense of a line drawn around the waters.
• “bounds” — חֹק (ḥoq): This word can mean a prescribed limit or an appointed rule. Here it adds the idea of a boundary set in place, not merely an edge noticed by an observer.

Why Job 26:10 matters

• Job’s answer places God’s reach beyond the situations his friends have been debating. The “waters” and their “bounds” are part of a much larger scene than the dispute about Job’s suffering.
