What does Job 37:3 mean?

Job 37:3 presents a storm as something God directs across the whole sky. Elihu describes the lightning reaching the farthest parts of the earth, giving his listeners a picture of the immense reach of God’s power.

Elihu is speaking to Job and the others gathered around him. After calling attention to thunder in verse 2, he turns to the movement of the storm across the sky. The phrase “ends of the earth” pictures distant horizons, not necessarily a claim about the earth’s shape.

The Hebrew behind Job 37:3

• “directeth” — יָשַׁר (yashar): The word can carry the sense of making straight or directing. Here it presents the storm’s course as directed by God.
• “lightning” — אוֹר (or): This word commonly means “light.” The KJV’s “lightning” makes clear the kind of light Elihu is describing in the storm.
