What does Job 37:9 mean?

Job 37:9 describes powerful weather coming from different directions: a whirlwind from the south and cold from the north. Elihu uses these familiar forces of nature as part of his speech about God’s greatness.

Elihu is speaking to Job, who has been questioning his suffering. The contrast between the violent whirlwind and the penetrating cold gives two examples of weather beyond human control.

The Hebrew behind Job 37:9

• “south” — חֶדֶר (cheder): This word can mean an inner room or chamber. Here the KJV understands the image as the place from which the southern storm comes, as though the storm had a hidden storehouse.
• “north” — מְזָרִים (mezarim): This word is associated with winds that scatter or disperse. The KJV identifies the source of the cold as the north.

Why Job 37:9 matters

• The verse uses direction to make its picture concrete. “South” and “north” set the whirlwind and cold at opposite points, giving Elihu’s description a sense of the wide reach of the weather.
