What does Job 6:4 mean?

Job 6:4 describes Job’s suffering as something he feels God has directed against him. Job speaks as a wounded person whose distress reaches deep inside him, leaving him afraid and overwhelmed.

Job says this to Eliphaz, a friend who has answered Job’s earlier outcry. The images move from arrows lodged inside Job to terrors arranged like an army against him. The verse gives the reason for Job’s intense complaint: he experiences his suffering as an attack from the Almighty.

The Hebrew behind Job 6:4

• “Almighty” — שַׁדַּי (shaddai): This is a name for God often translated “Almighty.” Job uses the name as he describes the power he feels has turned against him.
• “spirit” — רוּחַ (ruach): This word can refer to wind, breath, or a person’s inner life. Here, the poison is pictured as drinking up Job’s inner strength, not just hurting his body.
• “array” — עָרַךְ (ʿarakh): This word can mean to arrange or set things in order. Job pictures God’s terrors taking their positions against him like forces ready for battle.

Why Job 6:4 matters

• Job’s words explain the weight of his complaint. In verses 2–3, he says that if his grief could be weighed, it would outweigh the sand of the seas; verse 4 gives the reason he sees for that crushing weight.
• Job speaks from within his experience. His words “within me” and “against me” show how personally he feels the attack, rather than describing suffering from a distance.
• Job’s account of God stands alongside the opening scenes of the book. Job 2:7 says that Satan afflicted Job with painful sores; Job 6:4 lets the reader hear how Job himself understands his suffering.
