What does Joel 1:3 mean?

Joel 1:3 calls on people to make the disaster they have witnessed known to future generations. The verse gives the event a place in the community’s shared memory, with each generation passing the account on to the next.

Following the question to the people in verse 2, Joel tells them how widely the account should travel through time. The repeated mention of children pictures a chain of telling, reaching beyond the children of those who first heard him.

The Hebrew behind Joel 1:3

• “Tell” — סָפַר (saphar): This word can mean to recount or relate an event. Here it suggests giving an account of what happened, rather than merely naming it.
• “children” — בֵּן (ben): This word often means “son” and can also refer more broadly to a descendant. In Joel 1:3, the repeated word marks successive generations in a family line.

Why Joel 1:3 matters

• Joel’s instruction grows out of the striking question in verse 2: “Hath this been in your days, or even in the days of your fathers?” The call to tell the story follows an appeal to what the listeners and their elders can remember.
• The account has a concrete subject. Verse 4 describes successive waves of locusts eating what remained after the previous wave. The opening words “of it” point the listeners toward the disaster Joel is about to describe.
