What does John 2:12 mean?

John 2:12 marks a short stop in Jesus’ travels. After the wedding at Cana, Jesus goes to Capernaum with his mother, his brothers, and his disciples, the people following and learning from him. Their stay lasts only a few days.

The account says they went “down” because Capernaum, beside the Sea of Galilee, was lower in elevation than the area around Cana. The verse moves the story from the wedding setting to the journey that follows.
