What does John 8:33 mean?

John 8:33 records a challenge to Jesus’ promise of freedom. His listeners appeal to their descent from Abraham and say they have never been in bondage to anyone. They cannot see why Jesus would speak of making them free.

The reply follows Jesus’ words in verse 32, “the truth shall make you free.” The speakers understand freedom in relation to bondage to another person. Their question sets up Jesus’ response about being a servant of sin in verse 34.

• “seed” — σπέρμα (sperma): The word can mean offspring or descendants. Here it expresses the speakers’ claim of family descent from Abraham.
