What does Joshua 4:13 mean?

Joshua 4:13 describes an armed group from Israel crossing the Jordan River as the people entered the land near Jericho. Their crossing was part of their commitment to help the other Israelites take possession of land west of the river.

Following the account of their families in verse 12, Joshua 4:13 focuses on the men ready to fight. The phrase “before the LORD” places their movement in the setting of the river crossing, where the priests carrying the ark stood in the Jordan until the people had crossed.

The Hebrew behind Joshua 4:13

• “prepared” — חָלַץ (ḥalaṣ): The word can carry the sense of being equipped or ready for battle. Here it pictures men organized for fighting, rather than simply people traveling with their families.
• “plains” — עֲרָבָה (ʿaravah): The word often refers to a flat, dry stretch of land. Here it locates the group in the low country around Jericho, west of the Jordan.

Why Joshua 4:13 matters

• The fighters came from tribes whose own land was east of the Jordan. Verse 12 names Reuben, Gad, and the half-tribe of Manasseh; their crossing shows them carrying out the promise recorded in Joshua 1:12–16.
• The number is an estimate of the fighting group, not a count of everyone who crossed. Joshua 4:13 says “about forty thousand,” while the wider crossing included the rest of the people.
• The destination points ahead to the first city in their path. The men reached “the plains of Jericho,” where the account soon turns its attention to Jericho itself.
