Joshua 6:27 (KJV)

What does Joshua 6:27 mean?

Joshua 6:27 says that the LORD was with Joshua, and because of this, Joshua became well-known throughout the whole land. The verse highlights that Joshua’s reputation spread widely, not because of his own efforts, but because God was actively supporting him.

Joshua 6:27 comes right after the fall of Jericho, where Joshua led Israel in a miraculous victory. The verse is a summary statement, showing that Joshua’s leadership was recognized and respected because God (the LORD) was clearly on his side. The people in the surrounding regions heard about what happened, and Joshua’s fame grew as a result of God’s presence and actions.

The Hebrew behind Joshua 6:27

• LORD (יְהוָה, YHWH): This is the personal name for God in the Hebrew Bible, often used to emphasize God’s special relationship with Israel. Here, it shows that Joshua’s success was directly tied to God’s involvement.
• Joshua (יְהוֹשֻׁעַ, Yehoshua): The name means “the LORD saves.” The verse uses his personal name to highlight that God’s saving power is working through him.
• fame (שֵׁמַע, shema‘): This word means “report” or “news.” It suggests that stories about Joshua’s victories and leadership were being talked about everywhere, not just among the Israelites.
• country (אֶרֶץ, ’erets): This word means “land” or “earth.” In this context, it refers to the whole region or territory around Jericho, showing how far Joshua’s reputation reached.

Why Joshua 6:27 matters

• Joshua 6:27 makes it clear that Joshua’s rise in reputation was not due to his own power, but because the LORD was with him, which sets the tone for the rest of his leadership.
• The verse connects Joshua’s story to earlier leaders like Moses, who also had God’s presence with them, showing continuity in God’s guidance for Israel.
• By noting that Joshua’s fame spread throughout the land, the verse signals to the reader that the surrounding nations were becoming aware of Israel’s God and the events happening through Joshua, which would affect future encounters.
