Psalms 103:22 (KJV)

What does Psalms 103:22 mean?

Psalms 103:22 calls on everything God has made, in every part of His rule, to praise the LORD, and ends with the writer personally urging his own soul to do the same. The verse is a sweeping invitation for all creation to honor God, finishing with a personal note of worship.

David is the speaker in Psalms 103, and here he expands his call to praise beyond himself and the angels to include all of God's works everywhere. The verse comes at the end of a psalm that lists God's kindness and mercy, and it wraps up by inviting all creation to join in blessing the LORD, using the personal phrase "O my soul" to show that this praise is both universal and deeply individual.

The Hebrew behind Psalms 103:22

  • "Bless" (בָּרַךְ, barakh, H1288): This word often means to praise or speak well of, and here it is used as a command or invitation. It shows that blessing God is not just about receiving from Him, but actively giving honor back.
  • "LORD" (יְהוָה, YHWH, H3068): This is the personal name for God in the Hebrew Bible, emphasizing a relationship with the covenant God of Israel.
  • "Works" (מַעֲשֶׂה, ma'aseh, H4639): This refers to everything God has made or done. The verse is not just talking about people, but all of creation.
  • "Dominion" (מֶמְשָׁלָה, memshalah, H4475): This word means rule or realm of authority. It highlights that God's kingship extends everywhere, so the call to praise is truly universal.

Why Psalms 103:22 matters

  • Psalms 103:22 shows that the call to praise God is not limited to people or angels, but includes all of creation, making the psalm's closing especially wide-reaching.
  • The verse connects the grand, cosmic scale ("all his works in all places of his dominion") with the deeply personal ("O my soul"), showing that worship is both communal and individual.
  • By ending with a personal call to his own soul, David models that even when calling all creation to praise, each person is still responsible for their own heartfelt worship.
