What does Psalms 148:6 mean?

Psalms 148:6 says that God has given the heavenly things he created an enduring place and a lasting order. Their continued place in the heavens is presented as something God established, not as something they secured for themselves.

After verse 5 speaks of their creation, verse 6 pictures God as a ruler who issues a decree. The word “them” refers back to the heavenly beings and lights addressed earlier in the psalm.

• “stablished” — עָמַד (ʿamad): The word can carry the sense of causing something to stand. Here it pictures God giving the things he created a firm place.
