What does Psalms 39:8 mean?

Psalms 39:8 is a plea for God to free the speaker from his own wrongs and spare him from becoming an object of ridicule. The speaker looks to God for help with both his wrongdoing and the shame that could come from it.

The verse follows the speaker’s declaration that his hope is in God (verse 7). His request about “the foolish” pictures someone pointing to his troubles as a reason to mock him.
