Psalms 49:16 (KJV)

What does Psalms 49:16 mean?

Psalms 49:16 tells the reader not to be afraid or unsettled when someone becomes wealthy or when their household gains honor and status. The verse reassures that riches and outward success should not intimidate or trouble those who see them.

The psalm is written by the sons of Korah and addresses all people, reflecting on the meaning of wealth and the fate of the rich. The context is a meditation on how material success is temporary and does not ultimately determine a person's value or destiny. The verse encourages readers to keep perspective when others seem to prosper.

The Hebrew behind Psalms 49:16

• afraid (יָרֵא, yare): This word often means to fear or be in awe. Here, it suggests not letting the success of others cause anxiety or intimidation.
• rich (עָשַׁר, ashar): This word means to become wealthy. The focus is on the process of gaining riches, not just having them.
• glory (כָּבוֹד, kavod): This word means weight, honor, or reputation. The verse highlights how a person's public image or status can grow along with their wealth.
• increased (רָבָה, rabah): This word means to multiply or become great. It emphasizes the idea of someone's household or influence expanding, not just their money.

Why Psalms 49:16 matters

• Psalms 49:16 clears up the idea that wealth and honor are signs of lasting security or worth; the psalmist points out that these things are not ultimate.
• The verse fits into a larger message in Psalms 49, which contrasts the temporary nature of riches with the enduring value of wisdom and trust in God.
• This verse helps readers see that feeling intimidated by others’ success is a common human experience, but the psalm encourages a different perspective rooted in deeper values.
