What does Psalms 74:1 mean?

Psalms 74:1 opens with a troubled plea to God on behalf of a suffering people. The speaker asks why God seems to have rejected them and why his anger is directed at people who belong to him and depend on his care.

The picture of sheep in a pasture makes the question especially sharp: God is addressed as the one responsible for their care. The heading calls the psalm a “Maschil of Asaph,” connecting the words with Asaph’s name.
