What does Romans 1:9 mean?

Romans 1:9 gives Paul’s readers a personal assurance that he remembers them regularly in prayer. He calls on God as his witness because his readers cannot see what he says about them when he prays.

After thanking God for them in verse 8, Paul describes his service to God as something he does “with my spirit.” He also connects that service with the good news about God’s Son, Jesus.

The Greek behind Romans 1:9

• “serve” — λατρεύω (latreuō): The word can mean to serve in worship or in religious duty. Here it describes Paul’s work of bringing the good news as service directed to God.
• “spirit” — πνεῦμα (pneuma): The word can refer to a person’s inner life. With “my” in this verse, Paul presents his service as coming from within himself.
• “ceasing” — ἀδιαλείπτως (adialeiptōs): This word carries the sense of doing something repeatedly or continually. In the phrase “without ceasing,” it describes the regularity of Paul’s prayers.

Why Romans 1:9 matters
