What does Zechariah 11:8 mean?

Zechariah 11:8 describes a shepherd who removes three other shepherds in a short time, yet also comes into conflict with the flock in his care. The verse presents a relationship that has broken down on both sides: the shepherd grows weary of the flock, and the flock rejects him.

Zechariah is speaking in the role of a shepherd, a picture of someone given responsibility for a flock. His words follow his account of taking care of the flock in verse 7. The three shepherds are presented as others connected with the flock; their removal is part of the scene.

The Hebrew behind Zechariah 11:8

• “lothed” — קָצַר (qatsar): This word can carry the sense of becoming impatient or weary. It suggests that the shepherd’s patience with the flock has run out.
• “soul” — נֶפֶשׁ (nefesh): This word can refer to a person’s inner self or life. Here, “my soul” and “their soul” express the feelings of the shepherd and the flock, rather than describing separate parts of them.

Why Zechariah 11:8 matters

• The final “them” points back to the flock, not the three removed shepherds. The Hebrew wording uses a feminine plural form suited to the flock, so the verse moves from the removal of the three shepherds to the shepherd’s strained relationship with the sheep.
• The flock’s rejection helps explain the shepherd’s next decision. In verse 9 he says, “I will not feed you,” bringing his care for the flock to an end.
• “One month” gives the removal a short time frame. The number three and the brief period make the action sound decisive, though the verse leaves the three shepherds unnamed.
