What does 1 John 2:12 mean?

In 1 John 2:12, the writer tells the people he addresses that their sins have been forgiven because of Jesus’ name. He speaks to them as people who already have forgiveness, giving that as his reason for writing to them.

The phrase “little children” is a warm way of addressing the people receiving the letter. After speaking of love and darkness in verse 11, the writer turns directly to the people he is addressing.

The Greek behind 1 John 2:12

• “little children” — τεκνία (teknia): The Greek word is an affectionate form of “children.” Here the writer uses family language to address his readers.
• “are forgiven” — ἀφίημι (aphiēmi): This word can mean “to send away” or “to forgive.” The Greek form here presents forgiveness as something already accomplished with a continuing effect.
