1 John 2:26 (KJV)

What does 1 John 2:26 mean?

1 John 2:26 says that the writer, traditionally understood as the apostle John, is writing to warn his readers about people who are trying to mislead or deceive them. The verse makes clear that the purpose of these words is to address the danger posed by those who would lead believers astray.

John is speaking to a group of early Christians who were facing confusion and false teachings in their community. By saying, "These things have I written unto you concerning them that seduce you," John highlights that his letter is meant to protect and inform his readers about specific individuals who are actively trying to mislead them, not just offering general advice.

The Greek behind 1 John 2:26

• "Seduce" (πλανῶντες, planōntes): This Greek word is often understood as "to lead astray" or "to deceive." It carries the sense of someone deliberately causing others to wander from the truth, not just making an honest mistake. This shows that John is warning about intentional deception, not mere misunderstanding.
• "Concerning" (περὶ, peri): This word means "about" or "regarding." John is being specific that his writing is directly addressing the issue of these deceivers, rather than speaking in vague or general terms.

Why 1 John 2:26 matters

• This verse clarifies that the letter is not just general encouragement but is written in response to a real threat of deception within the community.
• It emphasizes the seriousness of the problem of false teachers, showing that early Christians were already facing challenges to their beliefs from within their own circles.
• By identifying the purpose of his writing, John helps readers understand the context of the surrounding verses, which focus on truth, discernment, and staying faithful to what they have been taught.
