What does 2 Samuel 5:4 mean?

2 Samuel 5:4 states that David became king at the age of thirty and ruled for forty years. This verse gives a clear summary of the length and timing of David’s reign over Israel.

The verse is part of a historical account in the book of 2 Samuel, which records the transition of leadership from Saul to David. The writer is providing factual details about David’s kingship, helping the reader understand both David’s age when he began to rule and the total duration of his reign. This information sets the stage for the events and stories that follow in David’s life as king.

The Hebrew behind 2 Samuel 5:4

• The word for "David" is דָּוִד (David), which is the name of the central figure in this passage and throughout much of the books of Samuel.
• "Thirty" is שְׁלוֹשִׁים (sheloshim), and "forty" is אַרְבָּעִים (arba'im); these numbers are specific and emphasize the significant periods in David’s life and reign.
• "Reign" and "reigned" both use the Hebrew מָלַךְ (malakh), meaning "to be king" or "to rule." The repetition highlights both the beginning and the duration of David’s kingship.

Why 2 Samuel 5:4 matters

• This verse clarifies the timeline of David’s rule, which is important for understanding the chronology of Israel’s history and the events that take place during his reign.
• By stating David’s age and the length of his reign, the verse connects David’s story to other biblical figures who also began significant roles at age thirty, such as Joseph and Jesus, which some readers may notice as a pattern.
• The verse marks a turning point in Israel’s leadership, moving from the troubled reign of Saul to the establishment of David’s dynasty, which becomes central to the rest of the biblical narrative.
